Artistic Workshop
Spoken Word Performance: expanding skills and creating alliances
Facilitated by Kimberly Dark, Performer and Educator – (San Diego, CA)
This workshop will be based on brief performed examples and scenarios from Kimberly’s decade of work with community theatres as a touring artist. We will explore the compelling nature of spoken word performance in its current incarnation, its implications as a form of performance art and its relevance to theatre communities.
Kimberly Dark is an internationally touring spoken word performance artist and educator. She has delivered numerous workshops and residencies sharing her passion for awakening the performer within writers, the writer within performers and the activist within all of us. Her spoken word performances have been presented by theatres, festivals, literary events, colleges and universities. Kimberly’s workshops are in demand because she uses compelling examples and helps participants blend performance theory and practice in ways that expand possibility.
Learn to use what’s compelling in the current incarnation of this art form; how to avoid the pitfalls of putting up a spoken word show in a theatre setting; and how to build artistic bridges (and audiences) by working with additional performance communities in your area. Examine spoken word performance as a tool for increasing the number of women, people of color, and other marginalized individuals on stages.
